How to Learn Tally Prime: A Practical Roadmap for Beginners

By SterlingNest Faculty · 23 September 2026

Most people learn Tally backwards. They memorise menu paths and shortcut keys, and then freeze the moment a real business transaction does not fit the textbook example.

The right way to learn Tally Prime is to follow the life of a business. Start by creating a company the way an accountant actually would — with GSTIN, financial year and security controls configured properly. Then build your chart of accounts: ledgers and groups are the skeleton every transaction hangs on.

Only after that should you touch vouchers. Record purchases first, then sales, then payments and receipts, and finally journal adjustments. Each voucher type exists because a real business event exists.

Once vouchers are comfortable, move to the reports that business owners actually ask for: Day Book, Trial Balance, P&L and Balance Sheet. Learn to read them, not just print them.

Finally, practice reconciliation. Bank Reconciliation is where most interviews for accounting roles are won or lost, because it proves you understand the difference between books and bank reality.

At SterlingNest, this exact sequence is built into our Tally Prime Mastery course, and it culminates in a 10-step capstone where you run an entire simulated business yourself.
