GST Practical Training: 7 Filing Skills Employers Actually Test

By SterlingNest Faculty · 23 September 2026

When a job post says 'GST knowledge required', it rarely means knowing the definition of CGST and SGST. Employers test a specific set of practical skills.

First: can you raise a correct tax invoice? Place of supply, HSN codes, tax rate selection and invoice format are the basics every business expects on day one.

Second: do you understand Input Tax Credit? Knowing what is eligible, what is blocked under Section 17(5), and how to reconcile your purchase register against GSTR-2B is where real value lies.

Third: can you prepare GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B? Not in theory — can you take a month of transactions and produce accurate figures for each table of the return?

Fourth: do you understand Reverse Charge Mechanism and when it applies? Fifth: can you compute the net liability and set off ITC in the correct order? Sixth: do you know the due dates and the interest/late fee exposure when they are missed?

Seventh — and most underrated — can you spot a mismatch and explain it? Vendors filing late, credit notes, and amendments create differences that businesses struggle with.

These seven skills are exactly what our GST Practical Training program drills, using simulated filing workflows that mirror the real portal.
